Leave it to FLOR, one of my favorite carpet resources, to incorporate Pantone’s Color of the Year 2012 – Tangerine Tango — into their new product line. Pantone is the world renowned authority on color systems and spans across several design industries. Orange became a color trend several years ago and has become a classically bold color. Its warmth and playfulness still prevails over bland neutrals such as beige and taupe. Orange can be a tricky color with which to work. If it is too pale and not saturated enough, peach results and feels dated and uneasy. A warmer and denser orange can be soothing and energizing at the same time.
Throughout my years specifying paint colors, I have rarely encountered a client who does not like orange. Yellows and Greens have often been met with aversion, but orange seems to appeal to everyone. Combined with magenta/hot pink or aqua blue, orange will pop off of its canvas and sing.
Over the years I’ve enjoyed working with orange, whether it’s painting one wall of my living room, painting an activity room at an occupational therapy clinic, or painting a few walls in a client’s pied a terre. Orange conjures warm sunshine and positive energy.
As 2012 progresses take note of where tangerine orange pops up in your own world – in fashion, textiles, tableware, and home décor, because it will often. I guarantee that the color won’t feel so new to you because it will automatically feel smooth and comfortable, like a pair of fabulous leather and cashmere gloves that hug your hands.
